Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of the course, students are able to: to approach the concept of religious freedom and equality in the context of the Greek Constitution and European legislation, to know generally the role of religion in public space, to approach gender and equal opportunities with sensitivity, to apply knowledge to professional and social life with respect to human rights and European values, to approach with sensitivity issues of social prejudice and exclusion, to come into contact with the relevant religious freedom jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice of Human Rights.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the relationship between religion and human rights as it is shaped in the modern European social and political context. In particular, the historical evolution of Human rights and its relation to Christianity and other religions. Issues about religious extremism are also being considered. International organizations involved in religion and security are presented. Topics: 1. Religious freedom a European model? 2. European religious identity 3. Religions, Security and Public Order 4. Religious symbols in Europe 5. Islam in Europe 6. Religious freedom in European Constitutions 7. International Protection of Religious Freedom 8. Religious freedom in the ECHR and jurisprudence of the ECHR 9. The right to religious autonomy in the ECHR and the jurisprudence of the ECHR 10. The protection of the property of religious communities during the jurisprudence of the ECHR
