Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: Understand the basic schools of thought in Geopolitical Theory. approach the social, economic and political parameters that contribute to the formation of Muslim states to analyse the geographical and economic space in the formation of the East-West complex analyse the political actions and decisions of the Muslim world in the formation of the new diplomacy in the eastern periphery

Course Content (Syllabus)
Islam, State and Economy, is a course of economic history, political science, geopolitics and modern economics together. It examines geo-economics and geo-strategics in the political environments of the Eastern and especially the Islamic world in terms of history, political and economic organization. The configuration of space as a geographical horizon and the development of sociological complexes yesterday and today as a key parameter separating the eastern from the western world are key features to understand many of the contemporary events taking place in the eastern environment and how they affect the West. The principles of Economics and State in the Western world to what extent do they resonate in the Eastern world, especially the Muslim world, intertwining these in the basic schools of thought in Geopolitical Theory. 1, From Muhammad to the golden age of the Arabs. The Silk Road. 2. The Ottoman Empire 3. Colonialism - Protectorates 4. Decolonization, Independence, Nationalization. The case of Algeria 5. OPEC and oil crises - The development of the oil producing states 6. The Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Palestinian issue and the United Arab Republic (Egypt - Syria). The Iranian revolution and Algeria'sagreement with the USA. Iran today. The Iran-Iraq war and the two Gulf wars. Iraq today. The case of Lebanon. 7. International regional and specialized organizations in the Arab and Islamic world. 8. The economy of the Islamic countries of Africa, the former Soviet Union and Southeast Asia. 9. The Arab Spring (Egypt, Tunisia, Libya) 10. The Euro-Mediterranean Union and the EU's relations with the Arab world and Turkey 11. From Afghanistan to the Balkans and Syria. The economy of terrorism 12. The fall in the price of oil. Saudi Arabia. Preparing for the post-oil era. Dubai, Indonesia 13. Shari'a and the Economy
