• Distinguish between social and individual bilingualism.
• Discuss issues related to linguistic diversity in Greece.
• Understand the key issues of education for bilingual students.
• Identify the support structures for bilingual students offered in the Greek educational system and discuss their effectiveness.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is an introduction to the study of bilingualism as an individual and societal phenomenon. The course content comprises three interrelated components: A) social bilingualism, b) individual bilingualism, c) bilingualism and education. With regard to the first component, readings and discussion will focus on bilingualism as a global phenomenon, language shift and language maintenance, endangered languages, and issues of linguistic diversity in Greece. In the area of individual bilingualism, a distinction will be made between simultaneous and sequential bilingualism, as well as between early and late sequential bilingualism. The class will also examine bilingual language development and the factors
influencing it. Special emphasis will be given on the research regarding the impact of bilingualism on cognition. The class will also examine how bilinguals use their full linguistic

Written final exam (100% of the final grade).
Optional extra grade opportunity: a limited number of students will be offered the opportunity to deliver short presentations in class.
