Learning Outcomes
Students learn (1) how to cooperate and participate regularly and actively, (2) how to present a literary subject orally and (3) how to write a paper. This way they become acquainted with (1) multiple methods of text analysis and interpretation, (2) the scientific handling of bibliography/ secondary literature and (3) their own production of scientific texts. The language of the course is german, which additionally helps the students improve their language competence.

Course Content (Syllabus)
In this seminar, we will focus on the life and significant work of German writer Bertolt Brecht, whose oeuvre can be divided into different creative phases. Although Brecht's literary work includes both poetry and prose, our focus will be on his epic theatre, which made a fundamental contribution to 20th-century theatre practice and theory.
During the seminar, we will analyse four selected works in depth, which are exemplary of Brecht's epic theatre and address central social issues:
• The Good Person of Szechwan: A parable about morality and survival in a world that does not reward kindness.
• The Life of Galileo: A drama about the scientist's responsibility to truth and power.
• Mother Courage and Her Children: A critical portrayal of war as a business model and cause of personal loss.
• The Caucasian Chalk Circle: A story about justice, motherhood and social responsibility.
Through the analysis of these works, we will examine central elements of epic theatre – including alienation effects, narrative structure, and the use of music and commentary – that serve Brecht's goal of encouraging audiences to engage in critical reflection and social awareness.
