After the completion of all the course lectures the students will have the skills of: To understand the basic principles of the physical and chemival processes of the atmospheric environment as described in the course syllabus.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Atmospheric composition. Biogeochemical cycles of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen. Sources, sinks and lifetime of atmospheric pollutants. Emissions of air pollutants from natural and human sources. Classification of atmospheric pollution at different spatial scales. Elements of meteorology for the transport of air pollutants at various spatial scales. Characteristics of turbulence in the atmosphere. The structure of the atmospheric boundary layer. The turbulent terms in the basic atmospheric equations in the boundary layer. The turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) equation, the Richardson number and the Obukhov length. The logarithmic and power law of wind speed with height in the surface layer, and the Eckman spiral in the mixing layer. Atmospheric diffusion and dispersion. Dry and wet deposition. Chemical reactions in troposphere and stratosphere. Smog, photochemical smog and acid deposition. Global and long-term impacts of air pollution on earth: Stratospheric ozone depletion and Antarctic ozone hole, anthropogenic enhancement of the greenhouse effect and global warming.
