Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of the course, students
- will have met the basic instruments of the lute family (lute, theorbo, baroque guitar, baroque mandolin) and their peculiarities
- will have acquired the basic technique of the lute family instruments
- will be familiar with the basic notations of the Renaissance and the Baroque (mensural notation, Italian and French tablature) through primary sources
- will be familiar with the basic principles of early music.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is primarily addressed to students who have a decent level on the guitar (or other similar instruments) and moves between theory and practice. Students will meet the basic instruments of the lute family (lute, theorbo, baroque guitar, baroque mandolin) and will built up their basic technique. Easy repertoire will be explored through primary sources in to familiarise with the basic notations of the Renaissance and Baroque (mensural notation, Italian and French tablature). Theoretical treatises of the time will be studied in order to understand (and apply into practice) the principles of early music within the context of historically informed performance practice.
