Learning Outcomes
For the students to get to know and study the main milestones in the history of Archeology and the Art of Mount Athos. To delve into some of them, thus understanding the wider historical phenomenon of the Athonian state. To thus acquire the ability to work autonomously in scientific manner.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1) The sources of the history of Mount Athos. Periods of the history of Mount Athos.
2) The history of Mount Athos from the foundation of M. Lavra to the paleologeian times.
3) The history of Mount Athos during the time of the Paleologues
4) The Ottoman period. The "perks". Internal organization. Mount Athos and Ottoman rule.
5) The sacred shares and their distribution. Contacts with the wider Orthodox world
6) The Revolution of 1821 and its consequences for Mt Athos. The reconstruction.
7) The Ecumenical Patriarchate and Mount Athos. The spiritual life.
8) The national competitions. The Liberation (1912). The regulation of the status of Mount Athos. The internal evolution of institutions and the contemporary situation.
9) Stations in the Byzantine monumental painting of Mount Athos.
10) The Byzantine painting of portable icons and his manuscripts Agios Oros.
11))Introduction to the architecture of Mount Athos
12) Stations in the Byzantine art of Mount Athos: sculpture, woodcarving, needlework, needlework.
