Course Content (Syllabus)
Each postgraduate student must prepare a Master's Thesis, which must have research content and corresponds to a workload of 30 ECTS. The Thesis, which is prepared during the 3rd semester of postgraduate studies, is conducted under the guidance and supervision of a professor of the Chemistry Department of AUTH among the faculty of the postgraduate program. For the preparation of a Master's Thesis (article 34, par. 4 of Law 4485/2017), the Curriculum Committee (CC) appoints its supervisor, following an application from the candidate, which declares the proposed title of the Thesis, the proposed supervisor, who countersigns and a summary of the proposed work, It is possible to appoint a professor or lecturer as Supervisor from another Laboratory of the Department, apart from the one supported by the Postgraduate Program, as long as he teaches at the program. Applications/declarations of supervisors are submitted by postgraduate students at the secretariat of Postgraduate Program and are approved by the C.C. at the start of the 3rd semester of studies. Examination and evaluation of the Master's Thesis The Departments’ Assembly (DA) sets up a three-member Examination Committee (EC) for the examination and approval of the Thesis. The members of the Examination Committee should have the same or related scientific expertise as the subject of the Postgraduate Program and in particular of the Thesis. EC includes the supervisor of the Thesis and two (2) other Professors or other Researchers, who have legal qualifications and are designated by the DA after a relevant recommendation from the supervisor. In exceptional cases, if there is an objective weakness or an important reason, it is possible to replace the supervisor or a member of the EC after a decision of the DA. The replacement of the supervising professor is possible, after a documented request of the postgraduate student and the supervisor as well as the consent of the proposed new supervisor. The replacement must be made within a reasonable period of time for the completion of the Master's Thesis. The Thesis can be carried out in part or in its entirety in a foreign University of abroad in the context of official programs/collaborations between the AUTh. and the corresponding University, or to other Greek or foreign research institutions with the consent of the supervisor, relevant recommendation of the CC and final approval of DA. The writing of the Thesis and its presentation before the EC can be done, after a request of the Supervisor and the concurrence of DA, and in the English language when it has been prepared by a foreign postgraduate student or it has been conducted in a foreign University. The EC, after the submission of the Thesis by the postgraduate student, proceeds to the examination and grading. The grade of the Master's Thesis cannot be lower than 6. The presentation of the Thesis takes place before the EC on a date and place determined by the DA. Following its approval by the Committee, it is compulsorily posted on the Department's website. The Master's Thesis, after first being corrected by the Master's student, is deposited in the Chemistry Department Library in one copy. A copy is also deposited in the Central Library of AUTH. The two Libraries issue certificates certifying the deposit of the Thesis, which should be submitted to the Department's Secretariat and the non-existence of pending issues with the AUTH library system. The grade of the Master’s Thesis should be submitted to the Department Secretariat and include the exact date of presentation as well as the title of the Thesis in Greek and English.
