Course Content (Syllabus)
This academic course concerns, first, a general presentation of the historical events and socio-political conditions that influenced the society and the literature of France during the 2nd half of the 20th and the first years of the 21st centuries. Consecutively, the course examines those writers that tried to reinvent the French novel after World War II (such as Queneau, Vian and the representatives of the Nouveau Roman), as well as other, more “traditional” writers, such as Yourcenar, Tournier, Simenon, etc. Finally, the course deals with the works of writers of the end of the 20th century (such as Modiano, Lacarrière, Le Clézio, Houellebecq etc.) Representative extracts from novels by most of the above-mentioned authors will be presented during the course.
