Learning Outcomes
After the succesful completion of the course, the students are expected to: -have advanced knowledge on groundwater flows, in particular on non-steady flows, leaky aquifers and generalization of the method of images. - acquire skills regarding in situ measurement of aquifers’ hydraulic features (e.g. transmissivity and storativity)

Course Content (Syllabus)
The role of groundwater in water resources management. Aquifer classification. Hydraulic parameters, inhomogeneity and anisotropy. Mathematical simulation of groundwater flows. Analytical solutions for steady and non-steady flows in phreatic, confined and leaky aquifers. Well hydraulics. The method of images. Numerical simulation of groundwater flows. Pumping tests. Methods and techniques for hydrogeological research. Groundwater abstraction. Sea water intrusion in coastal aquifers. Problems in the development of aquifers: use of groundwater, combined use of ground and surface waters. Groundwater resources management models. The problem of groundwater pollution: sources and types of pollution, transport of pollutants, simulation models. Techniques for the protection and restoration of aquifers. Uncertainty analysis in groundwater pollution control. Delineation of well head protection zones.
