Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of "Metal Structures I" course, the students are expected to: 1) Identify basic applications of steel in construction sector (Morphology, static systems) 2) Be able to calculate and design the roof a single storey steel industrial building according to Eurocode 3, 3) Be able to cope with several loss-of-stability issues of steel elements and members-Buckling effects, 4) Be able to identify normative differences of steel and aluminium regarding serviceability, ultimate states and stability.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Structural steel, Properties and applications in construction. Modern codes for analysis and design of steel structures. Eurocode 3 and design criteria. Serviceability and ultimate limit states. Local buckling and classification of cross sections. Resistance of cross-sections. Truss systems. Stability phenomenon. Comparison with aluminium regarding Eurocode 9 provisions on serviceability, ultimate states and stability issues.
