Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1) Design a geotechnical drilling program for geotechnical purposes, depending on the problem, and propose the number, depth, and location of the drills.
2) Use and apply drilling and sampling methods (samplers for soil and rock formations, depending on their quality).
3) Record and evaluate samples and field tests.
4) Apply techniques for constructing boreholes.
5) apply techniques for mining, completing, and developing boreholes; and (6) apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom in a real situation (field exercise).
6) Apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom to a real situation (field exercise).
7) Evaluate the principles of drilling method operation in the field.
8) Perform on-site duties as a geologist supervisor in drilling.
9) Analyze and evaluate specific practical issues of sampling and drilling techniques for water wells through discussion with those responsible for the applications.

Field Trip
In the frame of the course, a one-day field trip takes place in the region of Central Macedonia where either a borehore or a well is drilled.
The field trip includes the viewing of the drilling, geologic observations in order to justify the scope of the works, presentation of drilling techniques-types of samplers-types of boring heads, in situ field testing and borehole logging techniques according to the projects’ specifications.
