Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Field Practices Asvestochori and Exochi (1st Semester). The field practices take place within the framework of the Compulsory Course "Introduction to Geology". The purposes of the exercises are:
- Purpose and guidelines of fieldwork
- Topographical maps (orientation, contour lines, scale, etc.)
- Geological maps (symbols, ages, etc.)
- Rock identification. Bedding vs. schistosity
- Tectonic structures identification
- Geological compass. Geometrical elements of surfaces (strike, dip direction, dip angle)
- Erosional processes (weathering-transportation-deposition)
- Depositional facies
2. Field Practice Stratoni (1st Semester). The field practice takes place within the framework of the Compulsory Course "Mineralogy". It includes the route Thessaloniki - Stratoni, Chalkidiki - Thessaloniki. It includes a visit to the mining facilities of the company "Hellas Gold" and to the deposit area of the mine. The purposes of the exercise are:
- Macroscopic identification of minerals and rocks in the field
- Discussion on the genesis of minerals and rocks
- Collection of minerals and rocks
The mixed sulfite minerals are presented and the way of their recognition and genesis is analyzed.
3. Field Practice Chortiatis (2nd Semester). The field practice takes place within the framework of the Compulsory Course "Geography". The purposes of the exercise are:
- Use of topographic and geological map in digital and analog format (orientation, relief, morphological sections)
- Measurements of angles, distances and inclinations, with instruments such as: compass, slider, laser distance meters, theodolite, etc.
- Using GNSS (Horizontal Coordinates, Elevations).
