Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the contribution of the Orthodox Church during five centuries of Greek subjugation and the efforts to shake off Ottoman rule (15th-20th centuries). Specifically, it explores key figures from the Church and Hellenism, the contribution of monasteries and metropolises to the liberation struggles, based on archival evidence. -- Introduction -- The five centuries of Greek subjugation and the struggles to overthrow Ottoman rule (15th-20th centuries) -- Figures of the Church and Hellenism. Part A: Metropolitan of Larissa, Dionysios Philosopher -- Figures of the Church and Hellenism. Part B, Section 1: Metropolitans of Thessaloniki before 1821 -- Figures of the Church and Hellenism. Part B, Section 2: Metropolitans of Thessaloniki after 1821 -- Metropolitan Apostolos Christodoulou: Teacher - Bishop - Patriot (1906 -†1917) -- The contribution of monasteries to the liberation struggle. Part A: The Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Makryrrachi in the struggles of Macedonian Hellenism (17th-20th centuries) -- The contribution of monasteries to the liberation struggle. Part B: The holocaust at the Holy Monastery of All Saints through the press of the time (1878) -- The contribution of the Church to the most significant post-revolutionary movements in Macedonia: Halkidiki - Veria - Naousa - Pieria (1821/22-1878) -- The struggles from the Archives of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki (1876-1912). Oral exam in groups at the end of the semester. The exam is conducted by the professor and its results are available to the students. Written exam for special and legally prescribed categories of students. Alternative examination through assignments for foreign students.
