Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to:
-recognize and reproduce the letters and diacritics of the Arabic alphabet in all their forms with facility
-read a number of the short chapters of the Qur'an taught in class
-read a selection of other characteristic passages that have been taught in class
-translate the Quranic passages by understanding several of the grammatical and syntactic structures in accordance with their progress in the Arabic language III course of their degree
-Connect specific words and verses with the interpretations in specific exegetical Sunni works of the classical and post-classical period
- outline the history of the evolution of the interpretive tradition of the Quran
-provide examples from different genre of tafsir literature (lexicographical, allegorical)
- compare the academic approach of the study of exegetical texts with the activity of "tafsir" as a confessional act in the modern everyday life
-take a stance on the challenges of studying a sacred text with a symbolic and ritual function
-read introductory articles on the history of tafsir from the beginning of Islam to the present day
-use public speaking skills (in presentations)
-use academic writing and independent research skills (in written assignments)

Course Content (Syllabus)
The students reach a more advanced level in the mastery of the Quranic text and its exegesis, building, at the same time, further in the technical and theoretical questions of the previous two classes. In the end of the third semester students have a sophisticated and scholarly understanding of certain passages of the Quranic text, of the classical exegesis and of the theological importance of both
