Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able:
-To know the Orthodox missionary activity in the countries south of the Sahara from the 60s onwards (Theological documentation, conditions, efforts, cultural and social interaction, difficulties, perspectives).
-To recognize the cultural and anthropological particularities of the various ethnicities of the African continent that influence the transfer and codification of the Gospel message and its reception by Africans.
- To examine the role of the Orthodox tradition among the numerous Christian traditions active in Africa, the historical and the newer Christian currents and to determine the specificity of the Orthodox message.
- To realize the fundamental missionary principles for the development of new missionary communities and the conditions for their implementation: respect for local language, creation of local clergy and officials, financial self-sufficiency..

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course teaches the missionary activities of the Christian Churches in Africa. Events are examined, where the mission functions as a testimony, but also as a colonial act. It then explores the resurgence of Orthodox mission, its theological underpinnings, and missionary efforts in Sub-Saharan Africa from the 1960s onwards. The particular social, religious, political, anthropological conditions as well as the symbolic representations of the African tribes-nations and their importance in the codification of the Gospel message are highlighted. In this context, the importance of interreligious relations is analyzed, with an emphasis on the dialogue between Christians and the indigenous traditional religious communities and Muslims in Africa, while references are also made to the Islamic mission ("dawah"). The investigation is based on intercultural communication in Christian witness as well as its impact on the political, social, economic and cultural environment of the countries of the Global South and especially Africa. Then the theological, social, anthropological and cultural prerequisites for the establishment and development of a missionary community are identified in relation to the inherent possibilities and external contributions to the African diverse cultural environments.

Description
Oral exam in groups at the end of the semester. The exam is conducted by the professor and its results are available to the students. Written exam for special and legally prescribed categories of students. Alternative examination through assignments for foreign students.
