Learning Outcomes
After attending this class the students will be able to: i) understand which congenital and acquired cardiac and thoracic diseases require surgical treatment, ii) guide appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic workup, iii) evaluate results of diagnostic procedures, iv) acquire the fundamental knowledge background required for suggesting appropriate management in a specialized unit, v) develop the ability to combine knowledge from Anatomy, Physiology, Cardiology and Pneumonology with Cardiothoracic Surgery, in order to spherically understand diagnosis and management of heart and lung diseases.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Diagnostic approach in cardiothoracic diseases 2. Surgical anatomy of the thorax and the heart. Physiology of circulatory and respiratory system 3. Cardiothoracic imaging 4. Surgical management of coronary artery disease 5. Extracorporeal circulation, myocardial protection strategies and mechanical circulatory support 6. Diseases of the thoracic aorta and the pericardium - Cardiac tumors 7. Surgical management of valvular diseases - arrythmias 8. Lung cancer – Pulmonary resections 9. Surgical management of benign lung diseases 10. Surgical management of thoracic wall and pleural diseases. 11. Thoracic trauma 12. Pathology of thoracic diseases 13. Surgery of the mediastinum 14. Surgery of the trachea, diaphragm and esophagus
