Course Content (Syllabus)
Optical resonators and Fabry-Perot cavities. Multi-dielectric layer structures. Optical filters. Light propagation in crystals and related devices. Co-directional and contra-directional coupling: mathematical framework of coupled mode theory. Coupled mode devices. Control of guided optical waves. Electro-optical effect, phase modulators, optical switches. Integrated optical/photonic devices and circuits. Interferometers. Contemporary photonic and plasmonic modulators of very high bandwidth using Lithium Niobate technology and electro-optic polymers. Diffraction gratings and free space devices, MUX, DEMUX. Materials and fabrication techniques of optical waveguides and integrated optical circuits. Current trends in monolithic, hybrid and heterogeneous integration. Erbium-doped fiber optical amplifiers (EDFA) and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). Laboratory Exercises: A. Characterization of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer modulator (measurement of half-wavelength voltage, insertion loss, bandwidth, polarization dependence). B. Characterization of an EDFA optical amplifier (ASE noise, small signal gain, gain saturation). C. Characterization of a Fabry-Perot dielectric slab interferometer in the THz spectral range (measurement of FSR, quality factor, dielectric properties of material).
