Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to recognize in modern worship elements of influence from the period of Turkish rule and the historical conditions of worship during this era. They will also be able to understand the extent of the alteration of worship ethos and the prospects for its correction and restoration to its authentic form based on earlier worship sources.
During the period of Ottoman rule, the Orthodox Church experienced a spiritual decline which was also manifested in divine worship. This lesson will examine the alterations in the spirit of divine worship reflected in the ritual of the mysteries, the possible influences from the Latins (Roman Catholics - Protestants) but also the strong resistance to them (Kolyvades).
