Learning Outcomes
Understanding of the basic concepts and theories related to sustainable development. Understanding the economic dimension of environmental protection and environmental degradation. Familiarity with economic tools and policy measures for environmental protection. Understanding the importance of space, time and uncertainty (risk) in decision-making on environmental management, planning and governance Acquiring/enhancing the ability to assess: (a) the economic impacts of climate change and (b) the economic results (cost and benefits) of various mitigation and adaptation policies.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Exploring the relationship (i.e. the links) between the economy and the environment. Basic concepts for understanding this relationship. Ecosystem services, biodiversity and ecological resilience. Drivers of environmental impacts/degradation. Economic growth and inequalities. The limits of growth. Basic concepts and definitions of sustainable development. Sustainable development in the light of economy and ecology (environmental and ecological economics). Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals. Market failure, environmental problems and public environmental policy. Assesing the economic value of the environment and the economic value of ecosystem services. The spatial dimension of environmental values and its contribution to spatial planning. Pollution and environmental degradation, the spatial dimension of pollution, assessing the costs of environmental protection. Policies and (market-based) tools to control pollution and environmental degradation Environmental protection decision-making. The importance of risk and uncertainty The economics of climate change - estimating the costs (i.e. the economic impact) of climate change in Greece.
