Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge: Students will understand the fundamental concepts of natural hazards, demonstrating a clear understanding of the types, characteristics and mechanisms involved. They will understand and categorise instances of vulnerability, risk and losses associated with natural hazards, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of these concepts. Students will memorize the key principles and processes related to risk assessment and management in the context of sustainable development. 2. Understanding: Participants will interpret and explain the interactions between vulnerability, risk and losses due to natural hazards, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the relative complexities. They will articulate the process of risk assessment and its importance in sustainable development, identifying the factors that influence effective risk management. 3. Application: Students will apply the principles of seismic risk assessment to analyze the seismic vulnerability of buildings, utilities and infrastructure, demonstrating practical competence in this specialized area. They will apply the methods of landslide risk assessment to analyse the vulnerability of buildings and infrastructure in landslide prone areas, demonstrating practical application of risk analysis techniques. Participants will demonstrate the application of risk management strategies in the context of sustainable development, demonstrating their ability to implement effective measures. 4. Analysis: Participants will analyze seismic risk by conducting vulnerability assessments of buildings, utilities and infrastructure, identifying critical failure points and proposing mitigation strategies. They will assess landslide risk through detailed vulnerability analyses, identifying weak points of buildings and infrastructure and proposing strategies to minimise potential damage. Students will critically evaluate the resilience of infrastructure and networks, analysing the potential impact on sustainable development and proposing measures to enhance resilience. 5. Synthesis: Students will integrate knowledge from various sources to formulate comprehensive earthquake risk assessments, incorporating innovative approaches to enhance the resilience of buildings and infrastructure. They will synthesize information to develop landslide vulnerability analyses, proposing creative solutions to minimize risks and losses in vulnerable areas. Participants will synthesize concepts of resilience in infrastructure and networks, devising sustainable strategies to enhance resilience and mitigate risks over time. 6. Evaluation: Participants will critically evaluate the effectiveness of seismic risk assessments, assessing the success of implemented mitigation measures and suggesting improvements for future applications. They will evaluate the results of landslide risk analyses, providing constructive feedback on the effectiveness of the proposed strategies and suggesting improvements. Students will evaluate the replicability of infrastructure and networks, providing evidence-based assessments of the impact on sustainable development and proposing strategies for continuous improvement.
