Learning Outcomes
Course aim: To provide the necessary theoretical foundation in the academic field of money and banking and to contrast it with reality and practice in today’s financial markets.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
a) understand the contribution of the banking sector to the economy
b) measure and manage the risks faced by banking institutions
c) distinguish between time deposits, bonds, and government Treasury bills
d) assess banks’ solvency and their compliance with the Basel I, II, and III frameworks
e) understand the role of the central bank and the objectives of monetary policy
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course covers topics in the field of banking economics. It focuses on the theory and policy of money and how these interact with various forms of banking activity. It distinguishes between money and credit and analyzes the concept of financial intermediation. The role of banks in the modern environment is examined, along with the main risks they face in managing their assets and liabilities. The valuation of deposits, bonds, and Treasury bills as items on a bank’s balance sheet is discussed. Particular emphasis is also placed on central banking theory and the importance of banking supervision.
