Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will: Know the structure and mechanical, physical and chemical properties of natural and synthetic materials. Comprehend the relationship between chemical composition and physicochemical behavior. Identify the physicochemical mechanisms that affect the biological performance of materials. Are familiar with the principles of biocompatibility of dental biomaterials and biomaterial-host interactions. Know the scientific methods of biocompatibility testing. Understand how engineering principles are applied to prosthetic restorations to achieve a biological and functional outcome.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Module 1: Structure and properties - Categories of dental prosthetic materials Course presentation. Definition, purpose, content. Historical review, sources of information. Structure of matter, chemical bonds, solids. Covalent, crystalline, metallic solids. Polymers, ceramics, metals in Dentistry. Introduction to the mechanical behavior of solids. Stress-strain curve. Characterization of materials based on mechanical properties. Fracture, fatigue, hardness, impact. Viscoelasticity, viscoelastic models. Rheological properties, viscosity. Optical properties. Module 2: Biological properties – Interaction with tissues General principles of biocompatibility of dental biomaterials. Biological interactions of biomaterials-host. Biocompatibility testing methods for dental biomaterials. Module 3: Biomechanics of prosthodontic restorations Mass, forces and motion, Newton's laws, torque, inertia, free-body diagram, effect of forces on bodies, conservation of mechanical energy. Mechanics of the TMJ, jaws, periodontal ligament, bones. Mechanical principles of tooth preparations, endodontically treated teeth, beams and cantilevers. Biomechanics of dentition. Mechanical principles of partial denture design. Mechanics of implant restorations.
