Module 1: Structure and properties - Categories of dental prosthetic materials
Course presentation. Definition, purpose, content. Historical review, sources of information. Structure of matter, chemical bonds, solids.
Covalent, crystalline, metallic solids. Polymers, ceramics, metals in Dentistry.
Introduction to the mechanical behavior of solids. Stress-strain curve. Characterization of materials based on mechanical properties.
Fracture, fatigue, hardness, impact.
Viscoelasticity, viscoelastic models. Rheological properties, viscosity.
Optical properties.
Module 2: Biological properties – Interaction with tissues
General principles of biocompatibility of dental biomaterials.
Biological interactions of biomaterials-host.
Biocompatibility testing methods for dental biomaterials.
Module 3: Biomechanics of prosthodontic restorations
Mass, forces and motion, Newton's laws, torque, inertia, free-body diagram, effect of forces on bodies, conservation of mechanical energy.
Mechanics of the TMJ, jaws, periodontal ligament, bones. Mechanical principles of tooth preparations, endodontically treated teeth, beams and cantilevers.
Biomechanics of dentition. Mechanical principles of partial denture design. Mechanics of implant restorations.
