Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will develop: - their knowledge on the basic contemporary Social Theories on tourism - A critical awareness of the interactions between tourism and societies, both historically and in the contemporary world. - A critical awareness of tourists motives, activities and behaviour -A typology of tourism activities - An ability to define research topics which can make a suitable contribution to knowledge and debate in the areas of sociology of tourism. - A critical awareness of basic concepts such as "sustainable development", "social economy", and "responsible tourism"

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to the Sociology of Tourism: An analysis of the schools of sociological thought and the key concepts that have shaped the theoretical framework for the study and interpretation of tourism as a social phenomenon. A study of the emergence and evolutionary trajectory of tourism over the centuries. From the first journeys of travellers to the modern forms of mass tourism, alternative tourism and virtual tourism. travel motivations and factors shaping travel behaviour: Analysis of the social, demographic, psychological and institutional factors that shape the characteristics and behavioural actions of tourists. Investigation of travel motivations and their linkage with tourists' characteristics. Stages of tourism development and typologies of tourists Tourists and locals: Principles of communication and interaction: Analysis of the social, cultural, economic and other factors that form the context of the encounter between tourists and locals. Social and occupational mobility in tourism: intra- and intergenerational mobility in the host country as a result of tourism development. Diverse economies, commons and tourism: monitoring tourism activity through the approach of diverse economies, the relationship between the commons and tourism Tourism development based on the commons and social entrepreneurship: CSL approaches, community economies and planning of tourism activities. Concept of 'responsible tourism' and 'ethics' in contemporary tourism: Conceptual clarification of the terms and their importance in the development of modern tourism as a social phenomenon, elements that characterize the 'responsible' tourist, dimensions of ethics in the context of tourism development.

Description
Students are examined in writting and debating on current epistemological issues discussed in class. Assessment is based upon students' ability to analyse given issues, to state clear answers and develop reflexive arguments on given questions within the social theory frame of analysis.
