Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able: • Τo understand the basic processes and parameters of soil pedogenesis • To understand the importance of conservation and protection of mountain soils • To connect soil physicochemical properties with soil environmental behavior • To learn and study about methods of sampling soil and plant tissues samples. • To obtain skills in soil analyzes • To Obtain the ability to interpret soil analyses and takes measures to restore soil fertility • To obtain the ability to investigate soil parameters that affect the development and operation of ecosystems • To be able to recognize natural resources for their more efficient use in forestry • To be able to solve problems of poor management and mountain soils degradation • To obtain the ability to create soil classification maps.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Physical, chemical and biological properties of mountain forest soils. Soil management methods of protected forest areas. Improvement of the fertility and productivity of degraded soils after fire, deforestation, erosion. Restoration of degraded mountainous soils from intense exploitation and grazing. Main course content • Basic concepts of mountainous soils • Main processes of soil pedogenesis • Formation of mineral soil colloids • Physical properties and productivity of mountainous soils • Organic matter and soil fertility • The Water retention from the soil • Mountain soils and hydrological cycle • The ecological importance of organisms in forest soils • The factors that affect soil nutrient content • Efficient use of nutrients for increasing fertility and soil productivity • Necessary measures to improve soil protection • Management of disturbed and degraded soils
