Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course students should be able to: - understand the basic circulatory physiology behind extracorporeal circulation - recognize the various parts of the heart-lung machine - be able to watch the function of the heart-lung machine during open heart surgery - understand the principles and techniques of myocardial protection - familiarize with the basic mechanical circulatory support techniques (intraaortic balloon pump, ECMO, VAD, etc).

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course syllabus is the following: 1. Use of vents in cardiopulmonary bypass 2. Complications of cardiopulmonary bypass 3. Technical complications in extracorporeal circulation 4. Blood conservation strategies 5. End-organ protection 6. Circulatory arrest - cerebral protection 7. Intraaortic balloon pump 8. Mechanical circulatory support 9. Principles of ECMO 10. Minimal Invasive Extracorporeal Circulation (MiECC) 11. Principles of pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass 12. Clinical scenarios in cardiopulmonary bypass

Description
Informatics technology is used for teaching purposes. All presentations have the form of power point presentations. Moreover, regarding laboratory "hands-on" teaching multiple wet and dry labs are performed. Wet-labs include sessions of extracorporeal circulation on laboratory animals, while dry labs consist of simulations of extracorporeal circulation and intraaortic balloon pump. For communication purposes, e-mail and online real-time communication platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams are frequently used.
