Learning Outcomes
The course has an introductory character and aims: (a) to familiarize students with the development of the Russian Theatre from its beginnings until the first decades of the Cold-War in relation to the history of Russian society and (b) familiarity with important plays and theories of leading Russian theatre artists.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course has an introductory and diagrammatic character. It aims to present the historical context of the birth and development of Russian Theatre until the early Post-war decades. Specifically, the first steps of theatre institution in this vast country will be presented as well as its extremely belated emergence during the Enlightenment. Then, it will be studied the development of the Russian stage in the romantic period as well as the achievements of great realist tradition of the 19th century and early 20th. Specific lectures will be devoted to the symbolist movement that was cultivated in before the WWI years, to the major achievements of the Russian stage-direction as well as the Russian Avant-garde in the years before and after the October Revolution. Finally, it will be presented the theatre status in the early decades of the Soviet Union and the formation of socialist realism in the years of Stalinism. The course will familiarize students with important plays and theories of leading Russian theatre artists.
