Students are expected to • become familiar with ancient Greek History from 1200 to 31 BC • be able to evaluate different scholarly approaches to the making of the Greek city-states • acquire in-depth knowledge of a special subject (social, economic) within the thematic unit • develop further their critical and synthetic abilities to produce written work with the use of sources and bibliography • improve their ability to assess and evaluate historical questions through the construction of appropriate arguments • become familiar with interdisciplinary approaches tothe thematic unit

Course Content (Syllabus)
The thematic unit covers the ancient history of Greece, from c. 1200 BC, when the Mycenaean world collapsed, until the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, including economic and social developments. The unit also refers to historiographical approaches to the making of the Greek city-states. The weekly seminars will focus on a special topic to be announced annually.

Student Assessment
Description
Evaluation is based on (a) written exams (50% of the overall grade), followed by (b) oral exams (30%) on a given list of books dealing with the thematic unit, and (c) the submission of a written essay of up to 5,000 words (20%), based on secondary and/or published sources to be delivered by the end of classes. The criteria for assessment include the bibliographical research, the critical approach to the sources used, the quality of writing, and the proper and consistent use of a reference system. A manual for academic essay-writing is available on the Department’s webpage.
