Learning Outcomes
The student will distinguish the global biogeography based on the distribution of flora and its evolution in geological time, understand and identify basic vegetation types based on their main floral content, classify basic types of macrophytic fossils, become familiar with palaeobotanical-polyanological methods and their applications in climate reconstruction.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Modern ecosystems and dynamics, biogeographic zones, vegetation zones. Vegetation evolution and global environmental changes in the palaeobotanical record: mass extinctions/lasting populations/refugia. Palaeovegetation in the European and Mediterranean area during the Cenozoic Era. Palaeobotanical methods/Palynology. Reconstruction of palaeovegetation, palaeoclimatic applications.
