Learning Outcomes
The objective of the course is to develop the knowledge and skills of students in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science regarding the nutritional needs of physically active individuals. The course also aims to enhance understanding of the role of nutrition in improving athletic performance, supporting recovery, and maintaining overall health. Furthermore, it strengthens students’ ability to collaborate with other professionals in the fields of exercise and nutrition. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: KNOWLEDGE •Understand the role of nutrition in supporting physical activity and exercise performance. •Describe the importance of energy balance and the energy cost of different physical activities and training programs. •Explain the varying nutritional needs based on age, gender, intensity, and duration of exercise. •Recognize the significance of hydration and essential nutrients in athletic performance. •Explain basic nutritional support and recovery strategies according to the type of exercise. SKILLS •Apply nutritional strategies that enhance athletic performance and recovery. •Assess hydration and macronutrient needs for an athlete. •Identify and analyze current nutritional trends and myths in the field of exercise. •Critically evaluate scientific data to support or reject the use of dietary supplements. •Recognize signs of disordered eating behaviors and recommend appropriate interventions or referrals. COMPETENCIES •Collaborate effectively with other health and exercise professionals in planning nutritional support. •Communicate evidence-based nutritional recommendations to various audiences (e.g., athletes, coaches, parents). •Manage health, performance, and the prevention of disordered eating in sports with responsibility and professionalism.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims to introduce students of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science to the fundamental principles of nutrition as they relate to exercise and physical activity. It examines the nutritional needs of individuals engaging in physical activity at various levels (beginners, recreational athletes, professionals), and the impact of nutrition on performance, recovery, and body composition. Emphasis is placed on bridging theory and practice, preparing future professionals for interdisciplinary collaboration in the fields of exercise, health, and nutrition. 1.Introduction to Nutrition and Exercise The role of nutrition for athletes and recreational exercisers. Energy balance and the energy cost of physical activity. 2.Estimating Energy Requirements for Exercisers Methods and calculations for determining individual energy needs. 3.Macronutrients and Exercise Carbohydrates, proteins, fats: roles, recommended intakes, distribution, and quality. 4. Micronutrients and Hydration Importance of vitamins and minerals, proper hydration, isotonic drinks, and electrolytes. 5.Pre-Exercise Nutrition Nutrition strategies before training or competition. Meal timing and practical food choices. 6.Nutrition During Exercise Nutritional support during prolonged or high-intensity exercise. Energy gels, fluids, and carb intake. 7.Post-Exercise Nutrition – Recovery Recovery strategies: protein, carbohydrates, glycogen replenishment. Optimal post-workout nutrition timing and content. 8.Nutrition by Exercise Type – Weight Loss and Training Dietary differences for endurance, strength, and mixed modalities. Strategies for fat loss with exercise. 9. Special Populations of Exercisers Tailored nutrition for children and older adults engaged in physical activity. 10. Dietary Supplements and Performance Evaluation and safe use of legal supplements. Evidence-based review of common ergogenic aids. 11.Nutrition Myths, Trends, and Eating Behaviors in Sport Critical analysis of popular dietary models and problematic eating behaviors. Disordered eating in athletes (RED-S, athletic anorexia). 12.Hydration and Exercise Fluid needs, dehydration risks, and performance implications. 13.Literature Review and Exploration of Online Resources on Sports Nutrition Academic sources and reliable websites for further research and study.

Description
Written exam of the theory (80% of the total grade) which includes: • Multiple choice questions • Short answer question During the semester, and on scheduled dates, students are invited to participate in two mid-term formative assessments with multiple choice questions and short answers. The results of the evaluation contribute to a percentage of 20% in the final grade. Also, they present to the class an individual work related to the content of the course (10% in the final grade). The grades of the two formative assessments are valid for two examination periods: the one immediately following the semester in which the course is taught and the September examination period. If the student receives a non-passing grade, they must be re-assessed. Formative assessments take place in the classroom during regular class hours. For students beyond the 7th and 8th semester, assessment may also be conducted online through the course page on the e-learning platform. The grade for the group project is valid for all examination periods.
