Learning Outcomes
On successful conclusion of the course students should have a view of the data and an understanding of the main discussions concerning the plan and architecture of settlements during the 2nd millennium in the Aegean through the evidence of regional survey and excavation. A special effort will be given to examine the variety of forms of living in the Bronze Age Aegean ranging from the Middle Helladic communities of the Greek mainland and the Minoan palaces of Crete to the Mycenaean citadels and the palatial sites of the Greek mainland.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course reviews the plan and architecture of settlements during the 2nd millennium in the Aegean through the evidence of regional survey and excavation. Following a brief discussion of the meanings of household, and community and of the methodological aspects of the topic, the course will focus on the analysis of settlements from different phases of the Bronze Age in different regions of the Aegean in order to present and compare the social, political, economic and symbolic aspects of habitation. A special effort will be given to examine the variety of forms of habitation ranging from the Middle Helladic communities of the Greek mainland and the Minoan palaces of Crete to the Mycenaean citadels and the palatial sites of the Greek mainland.

Description
Teaching is based on oral lectures and power point presentations (uploaded on elearning). A list of suggested bibliography is provided for reading in each thematic topic taught while fieldtrips may also compliment the course in order to have the students acquainted with issues of spatial organization and domestic architecture. Students are strongly encouraged to write short essays (word limit c. 2000 words) related to major topics discussed analytically in the course.

Student Assessment
Description
Evaluation is based on writtent exams and optional writing up of short essays (2000 words) only when successfully completed. Attendance is fully recommended once evaluation is based primarily on the investigation of topics thoroughly discussed during the course lectures.
