Learning Outcomes
1. Students learn the relationship between environmental problems and the subsoil, 2. They learn the physical properties of pollutants (electrical resistivity, density, magnetic susceptibility, radioactivity). 3. They relate the geological structure to the spread of pollutants in the subsoil, 4. They are trained in the organization of geophysical research in relation to predicting the possible spread of pollutants, locating pollutants in the subsoil and monitoring the restoration of an area that has suffered environmental degradation. 5. The research methodology of underground reservoirs for the storage of polluting substances is taught, such as e.g. the carbon dioxide.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The objective of this course is the application of geophysical methods in environmental issues mainly. The emphasis is on classification of environmental problems and their correlation with the appropriate geophysical methods. Fieldwork experience with emphasis to the evaluation of the results of the geophysical survey is included. The subjects that are being taught are as follows: Evaluation of geophysical data of, 1. Resistivity methods (soundings, tomography) 2. Self Potential 3. VLF method 4. TEM method 5. Magnetotelluric method 6. Georadar. 7. Environmental magnetism Selection criteria for the appropriate geophysical method depending on the environmental problem that geologist have to deal with. Assessment: involves the combination of a written exam (30%) and a research project in which students are asked to write a report on the geophysical results and interpretation of the data-sets that they have collected during the course.
