Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course the student will have the skills : 1. to know and apply the design philosophy of the foundations. 2. to assess and select the geotechnical design parameters. 3. to analyze the behavior of different types of shallow foundations and to select the optimum type of foundation for the project under consideration. 4. to design and analyze the optimum type of foundation in accordance with applicable design standards, geotechnical conditions and logistic constraints of the project. 5. to use relevant software to solve problems. 6. to supervise the site construction of the foundation

Course Content (Syllabus)
Analysis and design of surface foundations (footings, footings, footings, cavity walls). Analysis and design of retaining walls. Design regulations (Eurocode 7, EAC 2000). Underground works with open excavation. Tunnels. Earthworks. Special contents: Introduction to foundations, Basic design principles of surface foundations with EC7 Checking the bearing capacity of surface foundations with EC7, Checking slip and overturning, Checking settlement with EC7, Checking bending with EC2, Checking shear and shear with EC2, Basic design principles eccentric footings, Example of eccentric footing design , Checking surface foundations for seismic loading with EC8, Dynamic foundation springs Introduction to retaining projects , Categories of retaining projects - Basic principles of thrust calculation Limit states of failure - Example of gravity wall calculation with EC7 Earthquake design - Basic principles of EC8 - Example of reinforced concrete wall calculation with EC7 and EC2, Example of reinforced concrete wall calculation with EC7 and EC2, - Construction details, Introduction to underground projects: Morphology of retaining diaphragms, Thrust calculation, - Selection of design parameter values (Soil classes, diaphragm flexibility, diaphragm movements, diaphragm soil friction, Example of a diaphragm calculation with a retaining wall according to EC7. Case of multiple bracing, Underground works with ground level above the bottom of the excavation. Pumping through the excavation. Lowering of the groundwater level Bottom stability. Description
Written exam on course material and oral examination with the delivery of the course thesis (project). The course thesis is required (project). The written exams count for 80% and the oral examination for 20% of the total grade. A passing grade is required for both written and oral exams.
