Learning Outcomes
It is a scientific research project undertaken by civil engineering students in their final (10th) semester, required for the completion of their studies and the awarding of their degree.
Upon the successful completion of their diploma thesis, students will be able to:
• Search for and analyze the necessary information, as well as adapt the knowledge they already possess to the subject of their thesis, in order to apply it later to issues in their scientific or professional field, as well as to acquire new knowledge.
• Select and correctly apply the appropriate tools and analytical techniques in investigating the key topics of their thesis.
• Solve complex or novel problems within the subject of their thesis by developing comprehensive, as well as creative or innovative, solutions and approaches.
• Communicate with both specialized and non-specialized groups and audiences, in order to convey, orally, in writing, and through other means, information, ideas, problems, and solutions on specific topics.
• Design, manage, and carry out research projects under supervision within the framework of their academic field of study, both individually and as part of a team.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The subject of the diploma thesis is related to one or more areas of knowledge within the specialization track (division) chosen by the student. It may also relate to subjects that span across multiple divisions, as long as its main part falls within the field of knowledge of the chosen specialization.
The diploma thesis is assigned by one or more divisions of the department to a student or to a small group of students (no more than three people), provided that the scope of the work is extensive or the complexity of the topic requires it. The three-member committees responsible for supervising and evaluating the diploma theses are appointed by the divisions, following a proposal by the supervising professor(s) and with the approval of the Department Assembly.
In the diploma thesis, the student, with the guidance of their supervisor, defines the objectives and the work plan to be followed. Initially, they must investigate the international literature and substantiate the originality of the thesis. The work includes experimental, analytical, or theoretical research. The literature review and the research findings are thoroughly described in the thesis document and are presented during the public examination.

Student Assessment
Description
The presentation and examination of diploma theses take place publicly, during a special open event organized by each division on the specified dates of each examination period. These events are held in the presence of the three-member committees, other faculty members, students, and any interested parties. The organization of the event is the responsibility of the division heads, who prepare the presentation schedule. Each diploma thesis presentation is allotted a predetermined duration.
The evaluation of the diploma thesis is based on the completeness of its content, the degree to which it meets the topic's requirements and the supervisor's guidelines, the aesthetic quality of the deliverables, and the success of the oral presentation and examination. In the case of group projects, each member's grade may vary according to their contribution and performance during the development and presentation of the work. A passing grade for the diploma thesis is considered to be any grade above 5.0.
