Learning Outcomes
Students will learn how to sampling rocks and to prepare samples for microscopic observation and analysis (mineralogical and chemical), as well as the appropriate instrumentation for their measurement. They will be taught the process of making thin and thin-polished sections of rock samples. They will be taught the separation and enrichment methods of minerals by mechanical means and specific solutions. They will be taught the methods of performing particle size distribution and chemical treatments according to Jackson techniques. They will determine pH and organic matter in solids and leachates. They will learn to use X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineralogical and crystallographic analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) for morphological and chemical microanalyses. The most important methods for chemical analyses of minerals-rocks and ores (AAS, XRF, ICP-MS) will be presented. They will be taught the method of fluid inclusions. They will be taught colorimetry and how to measure color parameters in minerals and rocks.
General Competences
