Learning Outcomes
This course focuses on the essential knowledge that associates global tectonics with the geochemistry of igneous rocks originated in every specific geotectonic setting.
General Competences
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Work autonomously
  • Advance free, creative and causative thinking
Course Content (Syllabus)
Geochemical characteristics (major elements, trace elements, isotopic characteristics) of igneous rocks. Constructive and destructive plate margins. Mid-ocean ridges, island arcs, active continental margins, back-arc basins. Collision of continental plates. Intra-continental and intra-oceanic geotectonic settings. Continental flood basalts. Relation between geochemistry and tectonic environment. Discrimination diagrams.
