The ArcFUEL project in which AUTH participated through the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing, Department of Forestry and Natural Environment was awarded as one of the best LIFE projects for 2014.
The aim of ArcFUEL was to develop a methodology for mapping forest fuels at European level. The role of the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing was the development of the methodology and its application across Greece. The methodology is based on the use of satellite imagery and existing digital maps that have the characteristic of being available for the whole of Europe. The methodology that was developed by AUTh was implemented in Portugal and in two regions of Italy and Spain from other project partners.
The fuel maps produced under ArcFUEL can be directly used in the prevention of forest fires, in fire spread simulation models, as well as the assessment of damages caused by a fire. |
