Learning Outcomes
Students expand their knowledge and study in depth important plays of German and German speaking theatre. At the same time, they integrate these plays in the social-historical circumstances of that time acquiring an overall overview of the dramaturgy of this period.

A) THEATRE AS AN OBSERVER OF THE SOCIETY * Tales from the Vienna Wood (1931), Kasimir and Karoline (1932), Faith, Hope and Charity (1932), The Visit (1956) B) THE FORMATION OF EUROPEAN MODERNISM * Marat/Sade (1963) C) THEATRE EXPERIMENTATION * Offending the Audience (1956), Kaspar (1968), Big and Small (1978).

Description
The course focuses on German and German speaking theatre and studies some important writers (Horvath, Dürrenmatt, Weiss, Handke, Strauss etc.) who form, each one in his own style and way, the theatre landscape of German speaking post war scene.
At the same time we study the social-historical context and its role in the formation of the circumstances that favor the development of a political theatre par excellence.

Student Assessment
Description
Oral Examination (obligatory): Students must present, individually or in small groups, one of the plays selected in this course. In this short presentation students must elaborate on a subject of the play (thematic, stylistic/dramaturgy, performative) (30%)
Written Examination (obligatory): Students must answer to two groups of questions:
1) Recognition and comment of an excerpt of a play analyzed and discussed during the course (40%).
2) Analyze of the form and the content of a specific play (30%).
The first group of questions is compulsory, in the second group students can make a choice.
