Course Content (Syllabus)
The answer to a question in times of human, cultural and ecological crises is as vulnerable as the validity of the question itself. Lab_42 focuses on the invention of questions of architecture in the post-antrhpocene through a critical stance towards the scheme utopia_eutopia_dyst/r/pia and towards the isolating and deceptive use of contemporary technologies as ends in themselves, as panaceas. The design module also focuses on defining questions on the architecture to come, as well as on a design methodology that, as individuated, will be the pursuit and the project of each individual student. Ultimate aim of the studio will be to redefine and radicalise contemporary inasmuch as less contemporary, digital and analogue media, techniques and technologies as well the clarification and expansion of their role in relation to the development of a contemporary problematic on architectural design inasmuch as its methodology not only as a representation tool but as a research platform.
crucial issues to be examined:
• crises of the real
• growth contexts for an architecture to come. Zones of sympathy of innovative architectural expressions, vocabularies and materials for the formation of novel/revealing spatiotemporal experiences. Anonymous materials, logics of /r/robotics, machine learning
• investigation of the need for personal expression and creation of a personal architectural vocabulary
• redefinition of existing mythical constructions (the myth of the ecological, the digital, the analogue, the traditional, the t/r/opic, the global, the local, identity, creation, innovation, transdisciplinarity, subjectivity, objectivity, hyper-textuality, bottom-up_top-down, Internet of Things, Big Data, posthuman, non-human, etc.
A realistic whilst experimental and hypothetical design methodology is proposed and aims at revealing alternative ways (tropos) of architectural production through handling juxtapositions, conflicts, tensions, divergences and crises as design working hypotheses.
Lab_42 will research issues related to the interscalar dimension of design that expands as a repercussion of materiality (properties and material behaviours and construction details) to the impact of social structures (diagrams, cartographies) in it. Design is perceived as an intervention that aims at researching and enhancing relations between whole and part and the intraactions and communications amongst the various class(h)es and scales /tropicalities of the real. It is a dyst/r/opic tactic which is not the offspring of any sci-fi for the future but experimentation and research on already existent techniques whose alternative use is encouraged.
