Learning Outcomes
Students learn (1) how to cooperate and participate regularly and actively, (2) how to present a literary subject orally and (3) how to write a paper. This way they become acquainted with (1) multiple methods of text analysis and interpretation, (2) the scientific handling of bibliography/ secondary literature and (3) their own production of scientific texts. The language of the course is german, which additionally helps the students improve their language competence.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The end of the old and the beginning of the new last century is literary characterized by an abundance of various endeavors and style trends, as the terms Jugendstil, Impressionism, Symbolism/ Aestheticism, Fin de siècle and Décadence confirm. In 1890 already, at the same time with the ideas and the works of the Naturalists, the first decidedly anti-naturalistic works emerge. The Viennese essayist Herman Bahr uses the term ‘modern’ in a different way in comparison to the naturalist Eugen Wolff and forms thereby the program of the so-called ‘Wiener Moderne’. The Wiener Moderne is associated with a society, which moves away from its former intellectual orientation marks and in which the traditional social, intellectual and cultural frame system gradually dissolves. A paradigm shift takes place, which manifests in literature as a self-crisis, a lingual crisis and a conscience crisis. It is a confusion which can be explained through the loss of values and the consequent dispute of the autonomous subject and which is articulated in many various forms of a searching for the self or for meaning. In this seminar we are going to see how literature reacts towards the crisis of the bourgeois modernity and how it processes it aesthetically. The following texts will be used:
