Learning Outcomes
The course intends for students to learn and understand historical developments in European theatre at the beginning of the 20th century but most importantly to analyse and evaluate change in the theatre, to read and interpret the responses to theatre practices and to form a critical discourse on issues related to artistic creation.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course focuses on the advent of modernism in European theatre and more specifically the avant-garde and the dada movement. Through a wide range of historical sources and artistic material such as playtexts, poems, manifestoes, paintings and visual objects, the students are required to reconstruct but primarily to understand the developments in theatre and performance practice, dada and the avant-garde initiated. During the weekly meetings topics such as the formations of dadaism, the relation to futurism and expressionism, the concept of performance that the avant-garde constructed, the variations of dadaist performance in Zurich, Berlin, Paris, New York, dada's influence on post-war theatre will be explored while texts among others by Huelsenbeck, Duchamp, Tzara, Mehring, Vitrac, Stein, Artaud will be discussed.

Description
The student assessment is based on three different methods, explicitly defined in the first meeting and fully described in the handout distributed at the introductory lecture of the semester (the criteria are also posted on the Department's site (course unit) and the blackboard platform of the course): 1. Evaluation of the student's presence and participation in the class 2.Oral presentation of a text (20% of the final assessment) 3.Essay questions at the final exam (80% of the final grade). The criteria of each evaluation are presented and discussed during the first and again at the final meeting of the course.
