General Prerequisites
It is of importance the students to have attended the History of Theatre I course.
Learning Outcomes
As a follow up of History of World Theatre I, the course discusses theatre in Europe, North America and partly Asia during the 17th and 18th century and in the early 19th century. Focusing on the aftermath of Rennaissance and the emergence of the moderninty it explores theatre developments in response to Neoclasicism, Enlightment and Romanticism (Lope de Vega, Racine, Moliere, Marivaux, Goldoni, Goethe etc) while examining genres and theatre practices in USA and Asia during these centuries.

Course syllabus 1. Introduction 2.Golden Age - Spanish Theatre (Autos Sacramentales), Lope de Vega, Calderón. 3. French Neoclassicism: Corneille, Racine, Molière. 4. Restauration Theatre: Wycherley, Congreve. 18th century Britain: Goldsmith, Sheridan, Garrick 5. 18th century French theatre: Enlightment, Reason and Revolution (Marivaux, Diderot, Beaumarchais) 6. 18th century Italian theatre: Goldoni and Gozzi. 7. 18th century German theatre: Sturm und Drang, Lessing, Schiller. 8. Romanticism in Europe: theory and national trends. The case of Britain (Coleridge, Shelley) 9. Romanticism in Europe: Germany (Goethe, Kleist, Büchner) and France (Hugo, Dumas, Musset) 10.Popular theatre in Europe in 18th and 19th century 11. Theatre in Russia (Griboyedov, Pushkin, Gogol) 12. New genres in Asia: Kathakali (India), Kabuki (Japan) 13. Theatre of the New World: USA Note: for every weekly session there are handouts distributed in class, including additional bibliography. Description
WRITTEN EXAMINATION The students have to respond to short answered informative questions on theatrical developments and facts and an extended answered question of critical textual analysis linked to historical material, such as the plays discussed during the lectures. This information is printed on the course syllabus, which is distributed in class and uploaded on the course E-learning site.
