Course Content (Syllabus)
Considering the Opera to be a complicated creation, the aim of this course is to show through specific examples the characteristic forms and particular genres of this kind of composition. The course is a seminar-type and offers, through the presentation of papers and the interactive participation, the basic knowledge about the historical stages of the opera development during the 17th and 18th centuries. Issues of dramaturgy and musical analysis of representative works are proposed for examination, which contributes to the better understanding of the structure of musical works. In addition, the various musical forms, introduced to the Opera from the 1600s until the 1800s, will be examined. Within the framework of the seminar, the historical development of the Opera, will also be examined in connection with the progress of the particular national traditions observed in Italy, England, France and Germany, where specific music-dramaturgical patterns were cultivated in the different genres of the Opera. To be more specific the operas of composers, such as, Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, Henry Purcell, Georg Friedrich Handel, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be examined closely.
