Course Content (Syllabus)
Religion and Politics in the Balkans of the 20th Century: The case of Yugoslavia (1918-1990) The main purpose of the course is the introduction to the greater geopolitical and historic environment of the Balkans during the 20th Century. In particular, the students will study the creation of Yugoslavia A in 1918 which occurred with the establishment of the Realm of Serbians, Croatians and Slovenians in the central political scene. Their study will also extend from the inter war period to the creation of Yugoslavia B in 1944 by Josif Broz Tito. In this way, the knowledge that the students acquire, leads them to a thorough understanding of the historical events related to the creation of Yugoslavia C in 1990, of Serbia and Montenegro. The aim of the course is also the development of one’s critical thinking towards those events that marked the identity of the South Slavic countries, both in their independent presence, as well as in their European course.
