Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course for the students is to acquire a deeper knowledge of the nature and the function of the Koine Hellenistic language, in which New Testament is written, and to learn to use this knowledge as an instrument of understanding the New Testament text.
By the successful completion of the course, the students should be able:
  • know the several linguistic theories for the nature of the New Testament language.
  • deepen in the special grammatical and syntactic cases of the New Testament language.
  • to understand in terms of the Modern Linguistics the use of the language in the New Testament text and based on it to derive an interpretative sense.

Course Content (Syllabus)
A diachronical and sychronical survey of the Greek language in the Hellenistic and imperial era is taught and the modern linguistic aspects are presented. The main linguistic issues concerned the socio-historical study of the New Testament language are considered, like as the vernacular Koine, the Atticism, the bilingualism, semitisms, latinisms etc.
  1. Theoretical issues of the New Testament language.
  2. The philology of the New Testament text. Grammatical and syntactic issues.
  3. The biblical influence to the New Testament language. Semitisms.
  4. a)Presentation of representative books and studies. b)Attendance of the scientific colloquium of the P.P.S. of the School, the “Exegeticum-Seminar of Orthodox Hermeneutical Theology”.
  5. The LXX and the New Testament language. Vocabulary and meanings.
  6. Ancient Greek, Koine Hellenistic and the Greek of the New Testament.
  7. Semantics and the language of the New Testament.
  8. a)Presentation of representative books and studies. b)Attendance of the scientific colloquium of the P.P.S. of the School, the “Exegeticum-Seminar of Orthodox Hermeneutical Theology”.
  9. Socio-linguistics and the language of the New Testament.
  10. Textlinguistic analysis (discourse analysis) of the New Testament text.
  11. Translation issues of the New Testament.
