Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will - be acquainted with the byzantine painting from the second half of the 14th c. until the end of the 15th c. -have realized of the necessity of combining the study of the rt with the historical and theological parameters of the period - have comprehended their contribution to the study of the development of the byzantine art as a manner of exoression of the society during this transitional period

Course Content (Syllabus)
Subject: Topics in the evolution of the byzantine painting from the second half of the 14th until the end of the 15th c. Selection of examples from the monumental painting, the portable icons and the illuminations of the manuscripts of the period: Constantinople, Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Serbia, Russia. Study of the their development in combination to the historical parapemeters, the theological issues before and after the fall of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Constantinople, Mystra. Special references and analysis to the spread of the artistic movements beyond the byzantine and ex-byzantine territory.

The performance of the student in the course will be evaluated on the basis of his/her participation in the course (5%), the oral presentation of the essay (20%) and the written version of the essay (75%).
