Learning Outcomes
The main objective of the course is to understand the concept of particle size and its methods of measurement. Understanding key processes used in the production of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals in general, such as crystallization, grinding, mixing, particle separation and drying including freeze drying. Laboratory practical work and video demonstrations are complementary used aiming to acquaint students with the above unit operations. It is also expected that after successful examination, they will be able to apply these unit operations (e.g.mixing, drying, milling) on every-day problems that they may face during compounding in the community pharmacy, or in the working environment of the pharmaceutical industry.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Make decisions
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in teams
  • Advance free, creative and causative thinking

Description
Software spreadsheets are used to record, analyze, tabulate and process data on a computer. Dedicated logging software that supports RS232 connection mode is used to automatically transfer and record data from computer-to-computer devices. Optional statistical software (SPSS and ExpertDesign) is used to analyze and compare data from different student groups. The presentation of the lectures is mainly electronic by computer viewing the slides of the lesson as well as educational demonstration videos of the device operation. For explanation, a Wooden Table is used. For the internship there is the possibility to use the library and computers of the islet of the sector. Software (Microsoft Excel) spreadsheets are used to record, analyze, tabulate and process data on a computer. Software used (supplied by A & D electronic weighing machine manufacturer) that supports the RS232 connection function for automatic transfer and recording of data from computer-to-computer devices. Optional statistical software (SPSS and ExpertDesign) is used to analyze and compare data from different student groups.

Student Assessment
Description
The students have to present written report with a detailed description of the labware, instruments and methods used in the experiments, following instructions detailed in the laboratory exercise leaflet. Also to present the results on appropriate charts and comment on them by comparing them with those of other groups. Upon handing their report of their laboratory work the students are examined orally and written examination takes place at the end of the semester.
Student Assessment methods
  • Written Exam with Short Answer Questions (Summative)
  • Written Exam with Extended Answer Questions (Summative)
  • Written Assignment (Formative)
  • Oral examination of the work during the practical classes
