Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims at introducing the history of the New Testament manuscripts, their textual variations and the issues that arise from it, the contribution of textual criticism in establishing the history of the NT text as well as in its exegesis: 1) Introduction: content, aim of the course, assignments. The various types of NT manuscripts and their main representatives, 2) History and dissemination of the NT text - textual types - Greek, Latin, Syriac and multilanguage manuscripts, 3) Introduction to the major features of a NT manuscript - Electronic databases of digitized manuscripts, 4) Practical skill in the description and transcription of NT manuscripts, 5) Main principles of NT textual criticism: stemma, families, quantitative methods, CBGN method, eclectic text, 6) Method and criteria of NT textual criticism: internal and external criteria and examples, 7) Critical editions and apparatus, 8) Gospels: prologues, Diatessaron, Eusebian apparatus, paratext, catenae, 9) Cases of textual criticism in the Gospels: Jn 7:53-8,11 and Mk 16:8ff, 10) Pauline letters: Euthalian apparatus, prologues to the letters, catenae, 11) Cases of textual criticism in the Pauline letters: Rm 16 and 1Cor 14:34-35, 12) Acts: text variations and Revelation: issues of textual criticism, 13) The contribution of textual criticism to the exegesis and the research of NT theology
