Learning Outcomes
Students with the successful completion of the course are able to:
-Specify the development and formation stages of the Mount Athos’ monasticism
-Analyze basic aspects regarding the organization and administration of the Athonite State
-Describe various ways of survival and exercise of Mount Athos’ monks throughout the centuries
-Explain in depth the reasons for the establishment of the centuries-old regime of Mount Athos
-Compare Athos with other monastic centers of Orthodoxy
-Value the centuries-old regime of Mount Athos that aims to protect the solitary peace and the unhindered worship life of the monastic community

Course Content (Syllabus)
First οf all, a) the conditions of the creation and formation of the Monastic State of Athos, b) its transition from one empire to the other, and its integration into the Greek State, c) the forms of monastic life (peculiar and communal monasticism), d) the or-ganization and administration of Mount Athos (Monasteries – “Skitae” - Kellia), e) the intellectual jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, f) the more than one thousand years history and offer of the Athonian State and the formation of the “avaton”, g) the tradition of finding protecting and miraculous icons, h) the emergence of holy and literate monks or the presence of ecclesiastic men (e.g. Ecumenical Patriarchs) who rested in the Mount Athos, and (i) the connection with it of Emperors, Leaders, and significant women, who supported it with donations and sacred heirlooms. Sub-sequently, approaching specific pilgrims’ and scholars’ texts of the last centuries (18th-20th centuries), and recalling personal experiences, if any, Monasteries of Mount Athos through the perspective of Greek and foreign travelers, and their journey through time will be presented. In addition, other Monastic Centers and Pilgrimages of the Orthodox East will be examined (Palestine, Sinai, Patmos, Meteora).

Student Assessment
Description
The evaluation of the students, except taking into account their active participation during the weekly meetings, takes place with the undertaking and submission of a scientific paper, which presupposes the following stages: a) conducting personal research with directions from the teacher, b) processing the bibliography recommended by the teacher or the detection of further bibliographic references by the student, c) writing a short paper (such as at a Conference or a Congress) or an article d) presentation of the work in front of the teacher and the classmates (with a parallel “powerpoint”), e) submission of questions by the teacher and the listeners of the course, f) submission of the final form of the paper, g) evaluation of the final form of the paper based on the observations made - improvements proposed in the previous stages.
