General Prerequisites
The aim of the course is to introduce students to Linguistics. After defining the field of linguistics and its branches, the characteristics of natural and human languages ​​are presented, the meaning of the linguistic sign and the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations of the linguistic structure are defined. The concept of the "word" and the property of double articulation, as well as the distinction between language and writing are discussed. The levels of linguistic analysis are presented and the distinction between linguistic competence and linguistic performance is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the shift of modern linguistic thinking to the study of communicative competence and linguistic heterogeneity. The dimensions of linguistic variation are discussed (e.g. social variation, bilingualism) and the concepts of standard language, national language, first / second and foreign language are defined. Finally, the concepts of linguistic change, language borrowing and linguistic error are discussed.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will: • have acquired basic knowledge in linguistics • have been informed about the European language policy and the possibilities for using European curricula at school • are aware of issues related to bilingualism and multilingualism in order to be able to manage multilingualism in the classroom at all levels of education
